Planning a garage clear-out, garden tidy-up or home renovation? Choosing a skip bin is easier when you have a rough idea of how much rubbish you are removing and what it is made of.
A few bulky items can take up more room than expected, while a small pile of tiles or soil can be surprisingly heavy. Both space and weight matter when deciding which bin to book.
Bellarine Bin Hire offers skip bins from 1.5m³ to 6m³ across the Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong. This guide will help you compare the options and estimate what your job needs.
What Does a Cubic Metre Look Like?
Skip bin capacity is measured in cubic metres, written as m³. One cubic metre is the space inside a box measuring:
1 metre long × 1 metre wide × 1 metre high.
A 3m³ skip holds approximately three cubic metres of material. That describes its volume, not its length or how much weight you can put inside it.
Rubbish rarely stacks into a perfect cube. Furniture, branches and other awkward shapes leave gaps, so an estimate is a starting point rather than a guarantee that everything will fit.
How to Estimate Your Rubbish Volume
Before booking, separate the things you are keeping, donating or recycling elsewhere. Then look at what actually needs to go in the skip.
- Group the rubbish together where practical. If it is spread across several rooms, make a list of the main items and estimate each area separately.
- Estimate the length, width and average height. Measure in metres and multiply those three figures for a rough volume.
- Consider what can be dismantled. Flat-packed cabinetry and flattened boxes take up less space than intact items.
- Allow for awkward shapes. Long branches, curved furniture and bulky pieces may not pack neatly.
- Check the materials. Heavy waste needs an appropriate loading arrangement, even when the pile looks small.
For example, a roughly rectangular pile measuring 2 metres long, 1 metre wide and 1 metre high occupies about 2m³. Its shape, the gaps between items and how it packs into the bin will affect the space it needs.
Compare Our Skip Bin Sizes
Use the following as a starting point. The best choice depends on your actual load, rather than the project name alone.
1.5m³ Skip Bin
Our smallest option can suit a modest household declutter or small garden clean-up where the waste fits within its capacity.
Weight limit: 250kg. A small bin does not automatically suit heavy materials. Contact us before booking for concrete, bricks, tiles or soil.
2.5m³ Skip Bin
A step up for small home clean-ups, garden waste and light renovation rubbish. This can be a useful option when you need more room than the smallest bin provides.
Weight limit: 400kg. This bin has no access door, so consider how you will safely load larger items.
3m³ Skip Bin
A middle-sized option for garage clear-outs, household rubbish and smaller renovation projects. Check the volume of cabinetry, flooring and other bulky materials before deciding.
Weight limit: 500kg. This bin has no access door.
4m³ Skip Bin
Provides extra space for larger household clean-ups and renovation rubbish. It can suit jobs where bulky items would quickly fill a smaller skip.
Weight limit: 650kg. This bin has no access door.
6m³ Skip Bin
Our largest online option provides more room for substantial clean-outs and bulky renovation waste. For a whole-property clearance, discuss the expected load with us rather than assuming one bin will hold everything.
Weight limit: 1 tonne. This bin has an access door for easier loading.

Match the Bin to Your Clean-Up
Decluttering a Room or Garage
Start with the largest items. A desk, shelving unit or old cupboard may take up more space than several bags of rubbish. Check whether furniture can be dismantled and measure anything that needs to stay in one piece.
Include everything you intend to clear out, rather than choosing a size based only on the first pile you have sorted.
Tidying the Garden
Branches and prunings can form a large, loose pile with plenty of air between the pieces. Cutting them into manageable lengths where practical helps them sit more neatly inside the bin.
Soil, bricks and concrete garden edging are a different consideration. Let us know about these materials before booking so we can discuss their weight and a suitable option.
Renovating a Kitchen or Bathroom
Renovation waste often combines bulky materials, such as cabinets and packaging, with heavier items such as tiles. Estimate both parts of the load before choosing a bin.
The number of rooms alone does not tell you which size is right. Replacing a few fittings can produce much less waste than removing cabinets, flooring and wall materials from the same room.
Moving House or Clearing a Property
Walk through the whole property and make a list of what needs disposal. Include sheds, garages and outdoor areas as well as the rooms inside.
For a deceased estate or a substantial house clean-out, speak to our team about the amount and type of waste. We can help you plan the hire around the work involved.
Weight Matters as Much as Space
A bin full of cardboard weighs very differently from the same volume of bricks. Each bin has a weight limit, and staying below the fill line does not necessarily mean your load is within that limit.
If you are removing concrete, bricks, tiles, soil or other dense materials, call us before booking. Do not assume that choosing a larger bin means you can fill it with heavy waste.
Tell us about mixed loads too. A layer of heavy material beneath lighter household rubbish still contributes to the total weight.
Check the Placement Space and Access
The bin needs to fit in the proposed position, and the delivery truck needs suitable access to place and collect it.
Include details about narrow driveways, gates, slopes, overhead obstructions and shared access when booking. Keep the collection route clear throughout the hire.
If space is tight, speak to us before choosing a bin. The bin’s capacity alone does not tell you whether the delivery will work at your property.
Make Better Use of the Space You Hire
Plan your loading so suitable heavier items sit low and the weight is spread evenly. Flatten cardboard and dismantle bulky items where practical, using smaller pieces to fill gaps.
Keep everything within the bin’s fill line and avoid items sticking out over the sides. Never climb into the bin to compress rubbish or attempt to lift something you cannot handle safely.
Read our help and loading guidelines before you begin.
Still Unsure Which Size to Book?
You do not need an exact measurement to ask for help. Call 0419 543 283 and tell us:
- What you are clearing out or renovating
- The main materials going in the bin
- The approximate amount of rubbish
- Any large or awkward items
- Where you would like the bin placed
We can help you compare sizes and discuss anything that needs a different disposal arrangement.
Book a Skip for Your Next Project
Once you have chosen a suitable size, book your skip bin online and add your preferred delivery date and placement instructions.
Standard online hire is seven days. Our team will confirm the delivery arrangements with you, so you can organise your clean-up around the booking.
