Whether you are clearing the garage, tidying the garden or renovating a room, a little planning makes loading your skip bin easier.
The aim is to make good use of the space while keeping the load within the bin’s weight limit and fill line. Here are some practical tips for your next clean-up with Bellarine Bin Hire.
Plan the Bin Position Before Delivery
Think about where most of your rubbish will come from and how you will move it to the bin. A convenient position can reduce unnecessary carrying, but it also needs to be suitable for the delivery truck and collection.
Tell us about narrow driveways, gates, slopes, overhead wires, low branches or shared access when booking. Our team can discuss placement with you before delivery.
Once the bin has been placed, do not move it yourself. Keep the access route clear throughout your hire so we can reach it for collection.
Sort Your Waste Before You Start
Separate anything you plan to keep, donate or recycle elsewhere before loading. Set aside items that need special disposal arrangements so they do not accidentally end up in the skip.
Check our help and guidelines for accepted and prohibited materials. Batteries, gas cylinders, chemicals, liquid paints, oils and other restricted items must stay out of the bin.
If your clean-up includes concrete, bricks, tiles or soil, speak to us before booking. These materials need an appropriate bin and loading arrangement.
Spread the Weight Evenly
For materials approved for your booking, place heavier, flatter items low in the bin and spread them across the base. Avoid concentrating the weight at one end or on one side.
Add lighter suitable waste above this, keeping the load stable as you work. Place items carefully rather than throwing them into the bin.
Remember that a bin can reach its weight limit before it looks full. Empty space is not a sign that you can keep adding heavy material.
Reduce Gaps Between Bulky Items
Large, awkward shapes can leave pockets of unused space. Preparing your rubbish before loading can help you fit it together more neatly.
- Flatten cardboard boxes.
- Dismantle furniture and shelving where it is practical and safe.
- Separate bulky items into manageable pieces.
- Cut garden prunings into manageable lengths where practical.
- Place smaller suitable items into accessible gaps without reaching into unstable waste.
Never climb onto the rubbish or jump on it to compress the load. If the bin is filling faster than expected, contact us to discuss your options.
Keep Everything Within the Fill Line
Do not load waste above the top rim or designated fill line. Timber, branches, furniture and other items must also stay within the sides of the bin.
Check the load as you go, particularly when adding long or bulky pieces. Leaving these until last can make it difficult to fit them without overfilling.
An overfilled skip cannot be safely collected. If your rubbish will not fit within the limits, speak to our team before adding more.
Protect Yourself While Loading
Wear sturdy closed-toe footwear and suitable work gloves. Use appropriate eye protection where there is a risk from flying fragments or debris, and keep children and pets away from the loading area.
Keep the route between your rubbish and the skip clear of loose objects and trip hazards. Take your time with awkward items, and avoid reaching over sharp edges or unstable materials.
If you find an unidentified substance or suspect a material may be hazardous, stop handling it and seek advice. Protective equipment does not make prohibited waste suitable for the bin.
Do Not Struggle With Heavy or Awkward Items
If something is too heavy, large or difficult to grip safely, do not try to lift it into the skip on your own. Arrange suitable assistance or discuss another loading approach before starting.
Consider loading access when choosing your bin. Our 6m³ bin has an access door, while the 2.5m³, 3m³ and 4m³ bins do not.
If you think you will need a door, call us before booking so we can help you choose an option suited to your waste and the available space.
Leave Clear Access for Collection
When your clean-up is finished, make sure parked cars, building materials and other objects are not blocking access to the bin.
Check that all rubbish is within the fill line and that no items are protruding over the sides. Let us know if access conditions have changed since delivery.
Choose the Right Bin Before You Begin
Bellarine Bin Hire offers skip bins from 1.5m³ to 6m³ for household clean-ups, garden waste and suitable renovation rubbish across the Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong.
Compare the options in our skip bin sizes guide. Think about the amount of waste, its weight and how you will load it before choosing.
